LABOR WILL SAVE THE MAYLANDS WATERLAND
A Shorten Labor Government will deliver $1.5 million in funding for a refurbishment of the Maylands Waterland.
Enjoying the water is a major part of life in Australia, and it is important Australian children learn how to swim and safely interact with water from a young age.
The 40-year-old Maylands Waterland offers a unique water and swimming educational experience for young families in metropolitan Perth, but the facility has been under the threat of closure because it has reached the end of its viable life.
Labor’s investment will mean the City of Bayswater can start the process of determining what a modern Maylands Waterland will look like, while maintaining what the community enjoys about the facility.
Shadow Minister for Finance Jim Chalmers said he was thrilled the popular inner-city facility, where children have learned to swim for decades, would be saved.
“For generations, Perth children have learned how to swim at Maylands Waterland, ” Mr Chalmers said.
“By saving this iconic spot, we’re also helping to improve access to Labor’s Swim Smart program, which ensure every Australian child has access to swimming lessons.”
“Labor can afford to invest in important local projects such as this because we’re not giving big tax handouts to the top end of town.”
Federal Member for Perth Patrick Gorman said the Perth community had been concerned about the future of Maylands Waterland.
“The future of Maylands Waterland has been a constant point of discussion for our community,” Mr Gorman said.
“This popular location for families with young children to visit has an important place in our community and I am happy to have worked with my colleagues to provide a solution.”
“Credit must go to all parties involved, including the City of Bayswater, mayor Dan Bull, local councillors and the Friends of Maylands Waterland group for their work on this important matter for Perth.”
“I look forward to working with all stakeholders to plan and build a modern, safe water park which will serve the community for many years to come.”
